Is the Green Belt sacred?
The ‘green belt’ description has elevated imagination over reality in Britain’s planning system. To the public, the areas it refers to seem to be much needed reserves of nature in an overcrowded, concrete Britain. They are, or at least they are believed to be, the last remnants of what was once England’s green and pleasant land. To say anything against the concept of the green belt thus seems to smack of treachery. But we need some hard-headed thought about why and how we protect land from the development we need.

Parting shot
Britain is one of the most expensive countries on the planet and London its rip-off capital. Filling your car, eating out, staying at a hotel or just doing the weekly shopping are all more costly undertakings than in other industrialised countries around the globe – even without taking house prices into account.

Gleiches Recht für alle?
Wenn es um die Rechtsordnung geht, dann war das Vereinigte Königreich niemals einheitlich. Zwar überwiegt der Einfluss des Common Law, jenes seit der normannischen Eroberung entwickelten Rechts. Aber Schottland zum Beispiel hatte schon immer ein an den europäischen Kontinent angelehntes Rechtssystem – von den juristischen Besonderheiten der Kanalinseln ganz zu schweigen. Ein einheitliches Recht für alle gab es damit streng genommen in Großbritannien noch nie.
Die Zersplitterung des britischen Rechts dürfte sich fortsetzen, wenn auch diesmal nicht entlang geographischer Grenzen, sondern nach Religionszugehörigkeit.

Intellektuelle Schützenhilfe – Über die Möglichkeiten von Think Tanks
Dass Unternehmer sich in öffentliche Debatten einbringen, ist in Deutschland immer noch eher die Ausnahme als die Regel. Das gilt ganz besonders für Familienunternehmer. In anderen Ländern hingegen ist unternehmerisches Engagement in der Politik viel verbreiteter, und zwar auch außerhalb der Parteien. In Großbritannien konnte sich zum Beispiel eine vielfältige Kultur von Denkfabriken („Think Tanks“) entwickeln, die der Politik in der Vergangenheit immer wieder neue Anstöße gegeben hat.

Auf dem Weg in die „Edel-DDR”
Wenn sich deutsche Unternehmer in öffentliche Debatten einbringen, dann ist das für sie regelmäßig eine Gratwanderung. Äußern sie sich kritisch zu politischen Entwicklungen, wird schnell der Vorwurf laut, sie verträten doch nur ihre eigenen Interessen. Melden sie gar grundsätzliche Bedenken am Zustand des Landes an, kann ihnen das als Undank ausgelegt werden. Eigentlich können Unternehmer bei politischen Äußerungen nicht gewinnen, solange sie sich nicht auf Allgemeinplätze beschränken.

Solving Britain’s housing crisis
If there is one topic that over the past decade has steadily climbed up the ladder of political priorities, it is housing. In the first years of the latest housing boom, which started in the mid-1990s, rising house prices were almost universally regarded as a good thing. As prices went up, people felt wealthier. And wasn’t a steady rise in house prices also a sign of economic strength?

Britain is proud to be a rich country with a modern and dynamic economy. But unfortunately Britain’s transport infrastructure is, quite simply, not fit for purpose. Whether it is airports, roads or rail, the UK’s transport infrastructure does not live up to the expectations of a developed economy.
